CranioSacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a highly effective light-touch treatment that releases tensions in the craniosacral system. This system consists of the membranes and fluid that surround and support the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the head (cranium) down to the bones at the base of the spine (sacrum) and directly involves the central nervous system.

By addressing the central nervous system directly, CranioSacral Therapy enhances the body’s own healing processes allowing every other system in the body to relax and self-correct. During each session, a deep sense of inner stillness and peace may be experienced. This state of inner stillness can create the right environment for the body to heal itself.

Are there any conditions that cannot be treated by CranioSacral Therapy?

There are certain conditions where Craniosacral Therapy would not be recommended. These are primarily related to any conditions in which a small variation in intracranial pressure could cause instability, such as with acute aneurysms, cerebral hemorrhage or preexisting bleeding disorders.

What can I expect from a CranioSacral Therapy session?

A typical session lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour and takes place in a relaxed and quiet private setting. The client reclines on the treatment table while remaining fully clothed. The therapist will stand or sit next to the client, lightly placing their hands on specific areas of the client's body, including feet, torso and head.

Each person as a uniquely individual response to CranioSacral Therapy. Some find the treatment very relaxing, while others can experience intensive release of symptoms through different sensations in the body. Some people will be reminded of past traumas during treatment and allowed to process through these memories in order to release them and regain health. All responses are perfectly normal and part of the process that the body goes through in healing.

Because each person responds differently, there is no set number of sessions needed to resolve any one issue. Sometimes a client will have one session and not need more. Some health issues take anywhere from 3 to 5 or more sessions to resolve. Your therapist will work closely with you to guide you through the healing process as quickly and effectively as possible.

What will I experience after my session?

As every CranioSacral Therapy session is unique, so are client's responses to treatment. Some clients leave feeling very relaxed and others leave feeling energized and invigorated. Clients may experience immediate decreases in pain or increase in daily function while others may experience gradual changes over the coming days and weeks. Results may be permanent and lasting or require subsequent treatments to cement results.
